The J.A Funk Funeral home, located at 318 Ash Street in Malvern, Arkansas, is locally owned and operated by John Allan Funk and his staff. The funeral home is a full service facility that more than meets the needs of those it serves, and allows its clientele the opportunity to customize the funeral ceremony.
For those who want to arrange funerals in advance of need, the experienced staff is ready to assist in any way it can to ease the burden on a family. J.A. Funk Funeral Home's insurance and prepaid funeral plans are underwritten by Ozark National Life Insurance Company of Little Rock, which is also a family owned business.
John Allan has spent over 30 years in the profession and is proud to be serving the people of his hometown. He is a fourth generation Hot Spring County native. His late father Bill Funk, who was Malvern's chief of police for many years, was also a licensed funeral director, and helped many families through their loss.
The building housing the funeral home was originally constructed as a mortuary in 1952 by Milton Kidder, a local mortician. It ceased being a funeral home in 1965 and was purchased by the congregation of First Presbyterian Church. They worshipped here until June, 1994, when a lightning strike started a fire. The fire, smoke and water damage left the building uninhabitable and without a roof. One year later the roof was replaced. The building sat vacant for five years until John Allan Funk purchased the building in September of 2000 and began an extensive renovation. Licensure was granted by the Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors in February of 2001, and operation was begun.
In 2003 a large carport was added that will accommodate at least five family cars. The 140 foot driveway leading from the alley behind the building to Ash Street was also widened and paved. In years to come, the second story, which consists of 3500 square feet, will be restored as an employee lounge area and seperate living quarters consisting of a three bedroom, two bath apartment.
"From the beginning it has been our policy to honor any burial association certificate at 100% of its face value. We will continue to do so whether we recover anything from the association or not. Any questions you might have about transferring to us your prepaid funeral plans from other places are always answered forthrightly," says John Allan. "Also, we DO NOT have an answering service! All our calls are taken 24 hours a day by STAFF MEMBERS, not some out-of-state switchboard that has absolutely no knowledge of Malvern."
Our goal is, and will continue to be, to offer unsurpassed service, top-quality merchandise, and the most affordable prices available. Our staff is all local. It's people who grew up in Malvern. When you walk in our door, you see familiar faces and already know the names. We feel that this is very important, and makes a great deal of difference. We simply want the honor of being your Funeral Director.
